SCIENCE DEPARTMENT EVALUATION POLICY   2003‑2004

Our assessment and evaluation of students is based upon the mandates of the Ministry of Education and the York Region District School Board.

Ministry of Education

•          A final grade is recorded for every course

•          Percentage grade represents the quality of the students overall achievement of course expectations

•          70% of final grade represents the students most consistent achievement throughout the course

•          30% of final grade will be based on final evaluation administered toward the end of course

York Region District School Board

•          Consider only summative assessment data when determining a report card grade;

•          Consider the student’s most consistent level of performance with special consideration for the more recent achievement information

Final Grade Determination:

Term Mark= 70%

•          Final grades determined by summative marks only (tests/projects)

•          Formative marks used to support summatives, and build mid term grades (quizzes, homework assignments etc.)

•          KCSS Science will be using a mark ceiling to determine final grades.

•          Summatives occur at or near the end of a unit, representing most recent achievement

•          All units will have the same weight throughout the course

What is a mark ceiling?

•          If a student completed only 7 out of 10 summatives, the highest possible mark he/she could receive would be 70% regardless of whether the average of those 7 marks was higher.

•          If there were 12 summatives in total and the student completed only 10 of them his/her highest possible grade would be 83% (10/12 = 83%)

Please make note, there are no make up tests, with plenty of advanced notice a test can be written early, but not later.

What is the difference between Formative and Summative Assessments?

Formative

•          Monitor progress

•          Provide feedback

•          Marks collected to reinforce, consolidate and enrich student learning

•          Marks used to support mid-term grade

•          Quizzes, homework assignments, worksheets etc.

Summative

•          Based on curriculum expectations

•          Occurs near end of unit or course

•          Demonstrates student achievement of curriculum expectations and learning skills

•          Marks collected and used to determine final grade

•          Tests or unit projects/papers

Do Formatives Count?!

•          Formatives do count, they will be used to determine mid-term grades

•          As well, formative marks can be used to support summative marks, especially when there is some inconsistency or unforeseen circumstance

•          Some summative activities may incorporate formative activities, such as unit portfolios (grade 9 applied)

Exam or other Culminating Tasks = 30%

•          The mark ceiling is used to determine the 70% term mark

•          Final evaluations will take the form of a 30% exam for senior courses with a university destination

•         Final evaluations for other science courses may be a combination of final summative activity and exam, with greater weight placed on the exam.
